Location: Springfield, IL 62794
Posted date: December 28, 2011

The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) seeks a visionary provost and vice-chancellor for academic affairs (VCAA) to continue the advancement of the institution as a premier public university with emphasis on the liberal arts, public affairs and professional programs.

Along with Urbana-Champaign and Chicago, UIS is one of the three campuses of the world-class University of Illinois. Originally founded in 1970 as Sangamon State University, UIS became part of the University of Illinois in 1995, marking the beginning of a period of transformational change. In 2006, UIS began offering a full four-year baccalaureate program with a new interdisciplinary general education curriculum. UIS entered the U.S. News and World Report College Rankings in 2008 and for the past four years has been ranked the best Master’s level public university in Illinois and the fourth best Master’s level public university in the Midwest. In June 2009, the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) admitted UIS to its select group of 25 public liberal arts institutions in the U.S. and Canada. UIS is nationally recognized as a leader in online education. UIS programs and people have received eight awards for excellence in online teaching and learning by the prestigious Sloan Consortium.

The UIS campus has three divisions—the Chancellor’s Division, Academic Affairs and Student Affairs—with a total annual operating budget of $82 million. The University of Illinois and its Springfield campus enjoy a healthy tradition of faculty, staff and student shared governance that remains at the heart of campus decision-making. The Campus Senate, a faculty-staff-student governance body, plays a vital role in: the development and approval of academic policy, of monitoring new initiatives and program reviews and overseeing faculty personnel policy.

Reporting to new Chancellor Susan J. Koch, the next provost and VCAA will assist in leading the campus at a critical time in its history. Faced with constriction of state resources, the new provost and VCAA will provide academic, operational and budgetary leadership to an evolving campus that strives to achieve excellent quality while making a unique contribution to the mission of the University of Illinois as a whole. As chief academic officer, the provost and VCAA oversees UIS’ four academic colleges: Business and Management (AACSB accredited), Education and Human Services, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Public Affairs and Administration, along with the Brookens Library and the Sangamon Auditorium. With its location in the Illinois state capital, UIS has a rich history of engagement with and service to state government, professional associations and the local community. The Center for State Policy and Leadership, which also reports to the provost and VCAA, contributes to a wide range of public affairs activities.

UIS’ next provost and VCAA will possess an earned doctorate, a record of excellence in teaching, service and scholarly achievement at the university level, senior level administrative experience, strong fiscal and management skills and a dedication to UIS’ mission and goals.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For fullest consideration, applicant materials should be received by March 1, 2012. Candidates should provide a curriculum vitae, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the complete position description at http://www.wittkieffer.com/position/university-of-illinois-springfield/provost-and-vice-chancellor-for-academic-affairs/7939, and the names and contact information of five references. References will not be contacted without prior knowledge and approval of candidates. These materials should be sent electronically via e-mail to the University of Illinois Springfield’s consultant, Katherine Haley Will, at UISProvost@wittkieffer.com. Documents that must be mailed may be sent to UIS-Provost, c/o Katherine Haley Will, Witt/Kieffer, 2015 Spring Road, Suite 510, Oak Brook, IL 60523. The consultant can be reached by telephone at 630-575-6178.

The University of Illinois at Springfield values diversity and is committed to equal opportunity for all persons regardless of age, color, disability, ethnicity, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status or any other status protected by law.

University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), a Catholic University in the Jesuit and Mercy traditions, invites nominations and applications for its next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. With a distinguished history of educational accomplishment and a long-standing tradition of service to the community, UDM is a vibrant resource for the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan. The new provost will join recently appointed UDM President Antoine M. Garibaldi at a particularly exciting moment in the University’s history. In addition to fully engaging faculty and academic programs as UDM’s chief academic officer, the provost will join the new president’s senior leadership team, building on previous accomplishments of this excellent urban Catholic university in an environment of renewed vitality and potential. As the primary representative of the president in his absence, the provost’s impact will be a major factor in UDM’s future growth and development.

In 1990, University of Detroit (1877) and Mercy College of Detroit (1941) consolidated to establish University of Detroit Mercy, now providing a single clarion voice as the largest Catholic university in Michigan. UDM enrolls over 5,500 students and offers a distinctive array of more than 100 undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs through its School of Architecture, College of Business Administration, School of Dentistry, College of Engineering and Science, College of Health Professions, College of Liberal Arts and Education, and School of Law. A prominent feature of UDM’s profile is the culture of service that has spanned generations of students and faculty, and continues to grow through increased participation. Service is deeply embedded in the fabric of the University, providing a platform for UDM’s effectiveness for educating in the urban context.

The UDM opportunity for academic leadership is exceptional. The provost’s attention and creativity to assure that UDM’s central values are sustained across all academic units will be balanced by the challenge of advancing the distinctive contemporary missions of each school and college. In addition, the provost will be expected to galvanize the development of an academic strategic plan that will support the larger goals of UDM’s new strategic plan, to finalize a core curriculum that has been under discussion, to identify new program opportunities, to nurture faculty, deans, and the provost’s administrative team, and to prepare for a successful reaccreditation in 2017. The strength of UDM’s shared governance ethos is defined by long-standing collective bargaining agreements and the more recent development of a McNichols Faculty Assembly. In concert with President Garibaldi’s leadership, the provost will be the chief advocate for the academic program and will consistently reinforce the centrality of the academic program.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to review the Provost Search Profile, which contains specific information regarding the application process and additional insights about the agenda for provostial leadership at:

www.udmercy.edu or www.agbsearch.com.

Ursinus College, one of the nation’s most impressive liberal arts colleges, invites nominations and applications for its next Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College (VPAA). This is a compelling opportunity for a seasoned academic leader.

The Ursinus College community is strikingly tenacious about the purpose of its educational program. The clarity of its academic mission, the centrality of the liberal arts, the intimacy of its educational setting, and the intensity of the teaching/learning experience combine to create a firm foundation from which the next generation of academic leadership will build.

The search begins as a new Ursinus president, Dr. Bobby Fong, launches strategic planning discussions about how best to ensure the ongoing relevance and impact of the liberal arts on the lives of the College’s students. The opportunity for enriching the academic program through more practical applications of the liberal arts — service learning, civic engagement, internships, international study, etc. – will be central to the strategic academic planning for Ursinus’ future. The new VPAA will arrive at a pivotal juncture to help the College sustain existing strengths, shape future academic initiatives, and work collaboratively with an engaged faculty. As the chief academic officer, the VPAA has responsibility for providing strategic leadership to Ursinus’ people and programs, supporting excellence in teaching and learning, maintaining the academic policies of the institution, and fulfilling a central role with regard to hiring, promotion, tenure, and faculty development.

With nearly all of its 1,750 students living on campus, an uncommon sense of community exists at Ursinus. A 12:1 student/faculty ratio enables a learning environment in which faculty teach, mentor, and partner with students in intellectual growth, personal development, and multi-faceted achievement. The “Common Intellectual Experience” engages all students and faculty from all disciplines during both semesters of a student’s first year, and learning is derived across traditional disciplines using a set of shared texts (books, music, works of art) and by posing the essential questions of a liberal education.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to review the Search Profile for the VPAA, which contains additional information on the nature of this opportunity and details of the application process, at: www.ursinus.edu or www.agbsearch.com.

Although applications will be accepted until the time that a new VPAA is appointed, candidates should plan to submit materials by February 20 for the most favorable consideration. All inquiries should be directed to:

Dr. Thomas B. Courtice or Ms. Judith B. Ward tbc@agbsearch.com, (614-395-3229) or jbw@agbsearch.com, (202-215-8519) AGB Search

The Board of Regents and the Presidential Search Committee invites nominations and applications for the position of President of Saint John’s University, a selective, national liberal arts college for men located one hour northwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Founded in 1857 by the Order of Benedict, Saint John’s is one of the nation’s great Catholic liberal arts colleges, imbued with a rich tradition of Catholic intellectual thought. Saint John’s University today enrolls nearly 1900 undergraduate men from 36 states and 29 foreign countries. It is one of four men’s colleges in the United States but is the only school in the country engaged in a coordinated relationship with a similarly successful women’s institution, the College of Saint Benedict, a women’s college, located six miles to the east in the city of St. Joseph, Minnesota.

Saint John’s University seeks a higher education leader of integrity and vision who will foster continued development of the institution, while maintaining its tradition of excellence. The successful candidate will possess an earned terminal degree, significant leadership experience preferably in higher education, strong skills in communication, a demonstrated aptitude for fundraising, and the ability to engage others in effective planning and implementation of priorities for the future of Saint John’s. The next President will be a Catholic with a deep appreciation of Benedictine values, who can ensure the ongoing Catholic and Benedictine character, mission, and identity of the University.

Application Procedures

Board member and alumnus Dr. Kenneth Roering chairs the 17-member board-appointed presidential search committee. The search committee will begin a review of applications on January 9, 2012. It expects to conduct neutral-site interviews February 10 and 11 in Minneapolis, plans to invite finalists to campus during the week of February 20, and hopes to conclude an appointment by early March. The successful candidate would assume office during the summer of 2012; some flexibility on the start date is possible.

Saint John’s University is being assisted by Dr. Jacqueline Doud and Maya Kirkhope of Academic Search, Inc. in Washington DC. Jacqueline may be contacted at jpd@academic-search.com and (310) 597 9042 and Maya can be contacted at mrk@academic-search.com and (703) 380 9195. Send materials as an email attachment in Microsoft Word to saintjohns@academic-search.com. A complete search profile with information about Saint John’s University and the desired attributes for the President may be found at www.academic-search.com/current-searches/president-ceo-searches.
Friends University invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice-President for Academic Affairs/Provost. Founded in 1898, Friends University is a private, comprehensive liberal arts and sciences university with its primary campus located just west of downtown Wichita, Kansas. The University seeks an exceptional academic leader to partner with the newly appointed president, TJ Arant, to develop the academic vision for Friends and to provide trusted and collegial leadership to the faculty. The new VPAA/Provost of Friends University will begin duties on, or about, July 1, 2012.

As a nondenominational, independent University, Friends has provided a Christian-based, liberal arts education to students of all ages and denominations for over 100 years. While strongly committed to the liberal arts and sciences, Fiends has developed a unique blend of strong traditional programs and strong nontraditional undergraduate and graduate programs for busy adults. More than 1,000 students enroll in its traditional program; approximately 400 of them live in campus residential facilities. In addition, Friends offers several nontraditional undergraduate and graduate programs that educate in a unique way non-traditional-aged students who have other responsibilities to balance with school. Among the first to offer such program options in Kansas, Friends enrolls approximately 1800 students in a variety of on-line and on-ground venues during the evening or weekends that lead to an associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Friends affords exciting and significant opportunities for the new VPAA. The President will soon begin a process of strategic planning. The next VPAA will work in concert with the faculty to create an academic vision that includes a supportive and challenging academic atmosphere; active learning; diversity; stewardship of natural, human, and financial resources; and excellence in all educational endeavors. The new VPAA should also support the faculty in their roles as teacher-scholars, invigorate faculty governance, and administer the academic program fairly and equitably. The new VPAA must also forge and maintain the best of personal and professional relationships with all campus constituencies and provide a style of leadership that recognizes the central importance of continuing to build campus community.

Competitive candidates will have a record of distinguished teaching and scholarship commensurate with that of a tenured full professor at Friends as well as significant administrative experience. They will also have a strong grounding in liberal arts education as well as an understanding of the special challenges of educating non-traditional-aged students. They will demonstrate a style of leadership that is both supportive and collegial and also sets high standards of excellence. They will also possess a lively and interested mind and be comfortable working within the Quaker and Christian traditions.

The VPAA search committee will begin a review of applications immediately and continue work until an appointment is made. To assure full consideration, applications should be received by January 18, 2012, and must include a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and five professional references with email and telephone numbers (references will not be contacted without prior authorization from the applicant). Applications should be sent electronically (MS Word or Adobe PDF) to:

Vacancy Announcement

Dean of Students/Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs for Student Support Services

Governors State University seeks to appoint a Dean of Students/Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs for Student Support Services. This is a senior position reporting directly to the Provost requiring substantial previous student affairs leadership experience. The Dean of Students will manage units that oversee student life, student involvement, and student academic support; including the Writing Center, tutoring in a range of subjects, testing, recreation services, counseling, disability services, and veteran’s resources. The Dean of Students plays a leadership role in the resolution of student non-academic grievances.

The Dean/Associate VP will serve at an exciting time in GSU’s history. Founded in 1969, GSU is a non-residential, “senior institution,” accepting transfer and graduate students only. The university is completing an Academic Master Plan to greatly expand current programs. GSU is also planning the development of student housing on campus and the admission of its first freshman class in 2014. Thus the new Dean of Students/AVPAA will have the opportunity to play a foundational role in expanding current services to a growing population of students while contributing to a number of major potential new institutional initiatives: building a living-learning community, expansion of athletics from club to intercollegiate sports, and addressing health care needs for residential and lower division students. The Dean of Students/AVPAA will represent Student Support Services on a variety of university initiatives as well as representing the university to several external groups. The Dean/AVPAA also will undertake other projects as assigned.

Governors State University is the only regional, public, comprehensive university in Chicago’s south suburban area, serving approximately 7,750 students. GSU provides affordable and accessible undergraduate and graduate education to culturally and economically diverse students. The campus is conveniently located with easy access to Chicago and surrounding communities with a wealth of cultural and natural attractions.

Through its Strategy 2015, GSU emphasizes excellence, access, and innovation. Students benefit from the university’s high academic quality, range of convenient class times, increasing hybrid and online offerings, and outstanding educational value. GSU seeks to become a national leader in successful transfer of community college students to universities and recently introduced an innovative Dual Degree Program, with features such as tuition lock-in at GSU for academically eligible community college students who commit to earn an Associate Degree and attend college full-time. GSU offers several applied doctoral degrees in health and counseling fields and is planning to launch an Ed.D. in Leadership in 2012.

The campus is conveniently located within easy reach by road and rail to Chicago and surrounding communities with a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. The region has a number of high performing schools and engaged communities.

A complete application will include a cover letter, addressed to the search committee, which focuses on your qualifications and interests, a curriculum vitae, and a list of three professional references. References will only be contacted prior to candidate interviews. Review of applications will begin immediately. Be a part of a leading Illinois education institution that emphasizes accessibility, diversity, teaching, research and scholarship.
