Governors State University seeks to appoint a Dean of Students/Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs for Student Support Services. This is a senior position reporting directly to the Provost requiring substantial previous student affairs leadership experience. The Dean of Students will manage units that oversee student life, student involvement, and student academic support; including the Writing Center, tutoring in a range of subjects, testing, recreation services, counseling, disability services, and veteran’s resources. As a member of the President’s Cabinet, the Provost is the chief academic officer with primary responsibility for:

• maintaining a rigorous and challenging curriculum;

• encouraging excellence in faculty scholarship and creativity;

• overseeing academic personnel decisions and resource allocation, including academic facilities planning;

• promoting excellence and innovation in teaching.

Reporting directly to the Provost are the Deans of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Fine and Performing Arts, Business, Science and Engineering, and Education, Graduate School, Library, and the Directors and Deans of Academic Advising, International Programs, Honors, Multicultural Recruitment, Center for Teaching and Learning, Sponsored Programs, and Undergraduate Research. The Provost fulfills a key role in university-wide matters, participates in system-wide academic initiatives and planning, and represents the university to appropriate external bodies. The Provost must maintain high academic standards in an era of budgetary restraint. The Provost performs other duties assigned by the President and serves as President when the President is unavailable.

Required qualifications for the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs position include an earned doctorate or other terminal degree and academic leadership experience as a Provost, Dean, Academic Vice President, or other senior administrator. Candidates must also demonstrate a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship appropriate for an appointment as a tenured Full Professor in one of the university’s academic departments.

Desirable qualifications include:

• Extensive, effective planning and decision-making experience in curricular, personnel, and budgetary areas, with a record of increasing line responsibility in academic management;

• Collegial and transparent leadership that values shared faculty governance, accessibility, and commitment to diversity, coupled with the capacity to work in a faculty collective bargaining environment;

• Excellent communication skills, an ability to work with diverse constituencies, and experience in managing change;

• Understanding and appreciation of the mission and environment of a selective public, comprehensive university;

• Commitment to rigorous undergraduate and graduate education and to inclusive approaches to pedagogy, as well as a record of successful undergraduate teaching;

• Commitment to academic excellence in faculty scholarship and creative endeavors, undergraduate and graduate opportunities in research and creative activities.
