Presbyterian College has transformed lives for over 130 years. Widely recognized for the quality of its academic program and designated a “Best Buy” by Fiske, PC, as it is known, now seeks its next president to lead the college to even greater prominence and distinction.

A Carnegie One Liberal Arts College, having a long standing relationship with the Presbyterian Church USA, Presbyterian College offers its students a recognized educational experience that is built on the principles of excellence, honor, and service.  PC, however, has never rested on its considerable laurels. In recent years, the college has undertaken several strategic initiatives to expand its reach and to ensure its financial future. Foremost among these are the addition of a school of pharmacy, a Confucius Institute, a strategic review of its central academic programs, and the move to NCAA Division I athletics. The new president will have the opportunity to leverage these programs to further raise the national profile of the institution. The president will also lead the college during the late phases of its current, $50 million fund-raising campaign, providing him or her with the opportunity to engage immediately and substantively with alumni and others who have the capacity to impact directly the future success of the institution.

With a student body of approximately 1,350 and 99 faculty members, PC is a tightly-knit community of scholars and learners. In the liberal arts college, 98% of the students live on campus, 70% participate in community service and 30% are engaged in athletics. This familial environment also typifies PC alumni, who are passionate about and committed to the institution.  Building on the successful tenure of PC’s retiring president, its new leader and 17th president will have an excellent opportunity to galvanize the college community around a vision for the institution’s future.

Accomplishing this task will require a leader with a deep appreciation for the core values of the institution and of higher education as well as the business acumen necessary to continue the college’s financial integrity.  Characteristics that are required include a demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the liberal arts; support for graduate and professional education; a vision for the future of institutions like PC in our global society and the strategic sense to plan for that future; proven skill at fund raising; outstanding interpersonal, communications, and relationship-building skills; and the qualities of leadership that inspire others to take action.  It is expected that PC’s next president will be an active member of a Christian church.

About the Position:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the new President and CEO has an exciting opportunity to add new ideas and a fresh perspective to an organization that is poised to expand its market niche as a world-class institute for Washington-based internships.  The President and CEO oversees a staff of 10, including four seminar faculty members, and oversees a budget of $1M.

Essential responsibilities include:

•           Provide visionary and strategic leadership for the organization

•           Oversee all aspects of WII programs, including its internship and  faculty fellows programs

•           Establish and carry out enrollment goals for the Institute

•           Develop and implement a plan for maintaining existing institutional affiliations and internship sites while at the same time increasing the numbers of participating institutions and internship settings

•           Oversee the financial wellbeing of the organization, paying particular attention to expanding sources of revenues through fundraising.

Marketing and External Relations responsibilities include promoting positive working relationships with all constituents: students and prospective students; campus and internship site partners; and alumni.  The CEO and President will also expand the visibility of WII within the higher education community through presentations at national conferences and engaging in professional activities.  Programming responsibilities include general oversight of all student internship programs, managing the Faculty Fellows Program, and annual assessment and evaluation of each of the internship programs.

Staff supervision responsibilities include the recruitment, hiring, training and evaluation of all staff.

The Successful Candidate:

The ideal candidate will possess an advanced degree and will have a thorough understanding of and demonstrated commitment to experiential education.   He or she will demonstrate successful accomplishments as an academic leader, will be experienced in working with a Board of Directors, and will possess expertise in strategic planning, budgeting, fundraising, and staff development.  Candidates must possess experience working effectively with students.  A demonstrated sensitivity to diversity in staffing, curriculum and decision-making processes is a must, as is sound managerial judgment.  The successful candidate will be a high-energy person with the ability to articulate a compelling vision for an organization.  He or she will possess an entrepreneurial spirit and creativity in solving problems.  Candidates should have the ability to command respect as an ethical person with outstanding verbal and written communication skills. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills is also critical to success in this position. Familiarity with the Washington DC and greater Metro area is a plus.

Specific competencies required for this position include:

•           Marketing acumen, including the ability to interpret the benefits of experiential learning, to foster effective and productive partnerships with higher education institutions, the ability to define and communicate the value-added elements of the WII internship experience

•           Intercultural competency, including the ability to connect and relate to learners and institutional partners in a variety of cultures, populations, and ages

•           Familiarity with the use of technology to enhance the goals of WII programs and its administrative processes

•           Experience as a facilitator including the ability to leverage ideas into action

•           Proven success obtaining funding through fund raising, grants or other sources

•           Strength in program development and strategic planning and assessment, including the ability to analyze market trends and data leading to the development of strategic direction for new programs and services

•           Success in establishing and maintaining professional relationships with Board members

•           Success in motivating, engaging, and mentoring staff
