ACAD One-Day Workshop
As a national, individual membership organization for academic deans, provosts, vice presidents and other academic leaders committed to the liberal arts mission and to providing each other with professional support. ACAD accomplishes this goal by offering conferences, workshops and resources including a listserv, a handbook, and a web site. Created in 1945 as a caucus of deans from member institutions of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, ACAD is now an independent nonprofit organization housed in Washington DC and governed by an active Board of Directors who are all current deans, provosts, and chief academic officers at two- and four-year liberal arts institutions all over the United States.
ACAD’s long history of providing workshops at larger meetings (such as those of the AAC&U) on practical issues confronting academic administrators has evolved into a freestanding program intended to address issues of particular interest in more depth than is possible in a traditional 3-hour workshop.
ACAD’s long history of providing workshops at larger meetings (such as those of the AAC&U) on practical issues confronting academic administrators has evolved into a freestanding program that we are now able to offer as a new and welcome member benefit. Whenever possible, these workshops are held on and hosted by an ACAD member’s campus, thereby allowing ACAD members to become more actively involved in producing ACAD programs and allowing the organization to be more responsive to its constituency.
In the summer of 2003, ACAD offered its first One-Day Workshop on the campus of Loyola University in Chicago on the timely topic “Strategic Budgeting for Shrinking Budgets.” The Provost at Loyola, a longtime ACAD member, provided the venue, while the ACAD central office handled registration, publicity, and other logistical preparations. As a pilot program, it was a great success and has already generated responses from members eager to propose topics and to offer to host Workshops on their campuses.
Fees for the workshop are $100 for ACAD Members and $130 for Nonmembers. Attendees are responsible for their own lodging arrangements should they choose to stay overnight in the city where the Workshop is held.
